As the hostilities between Israel and Gaza bring increased airstrikes and escalating violence, members of our youth leadership program in Gaza are writing about how the conflict is affecting their lives.
Gaza is one of seven places around the world where we’re working to build an international network of young leaders who think globally and act locally. They’re learning about social issues, global needs and alternative dispute resolution, exchanging ideas across borders and inspiring their peers to take action on critical humanitarian issues.

A tale of two farms:

Plainview farmer Michael Zabel (top) expects to have a record corn harvest this year.

Meanwhile, 60 miles south of Zabel’s farm, LeRoy Johnson’s farm is experiencing a bad drought and his crops are stunted and dying.

Read more about the patchwork of lean and plenty that Minnesota’s farms are experiencing from reporter Elizabeth Baier.

In 28 years of law enforcement, I have seen a lot of hate. I have seen a lot of revenge. I’ve seen a lot of anger. What I saw, particularly from the Sikh community this week was compassion, concern, support. What I didn’t see was hate. I did not see revenge. I didn’t see any of that. And in law enforcement that’s unusual to not see that reaction to something like this. I want you all to understand how unique that is.
Oak Creek, Wisc. Police Chief John Edwards • Addressing a crowd gathered to honor victims of last weekend’s shooting at a Sikh temple in Oak Creek, Wisconsin on Tuesday night. This morning, FBI special agent Teresa Carlson revealed to members of the press that, despite previous reports that the shooter was killed by police, he actually died as the result of a self-inflicted gunshot to the head after being wounded by an officer returning fire.  source (viafollow)

A new law that takes effect Wednesday will turn more Minnesota prisoners into gardeners.

The law requires correctional facilities to start gardens if space and security allow. Inmates will grow fruits and vegetables, and donate what they don’t eat to local food shelves. The gardens will be modeled after one that already exists at the Red Wing correctional facility. Above, Jeremy Buschman, left, and Cory Schilling tend to weeds in the garden.

When I was a boy and I would see scary things in the news, my mother would say to me, ‘Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.’ To this day, especially in times of ‘disaster,’ I remember my mother’s words, and I am always comforted by realizing that there are still so many helpers - so many caring people in this world.

In the face of scary dangerous things happening in the world I always come back to these words from Mr. Rogers.
